Ground Broken for Greenville Convention Center Renovations

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Breaking glass and grinding metal helped officials celebrate the groundbreaking of the Greenville Convention Center’s $5 million facelift. The November 18 event will refresh interiors, as well as expand the 12-year-old center.

“We thought we had a good convention center when we originally designed it,” said Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas. “What we found out is that people love coming to Greenville, they love the quality of life here for their events. We just didn’t have enough that would allow us to compete for some of the larger events. We’re competing on a regional level across the country now for millions of dollars of events.”

The new additions will allow the center to accommodate 3,000 to 5,000 people at a time by adding 12,000 square feet to the center’s existing 60,000 square feet. The additional space includes a new ballroom, nine smaller meeting spaces and an outdoor terrace.

The center will stay fully operational throughout its expansion, which is set for completion in June 2015.
