New campus facilities do double duty in Oregon, Colorado and North Carolina

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Davidson County Community College opted to personalize the conference center it opened in August, employing a local artist to paint a mural that depicts the college’s history and its leaders.

The 20,000-square-foot, two-story Davidson County Community College Conference Center primarily serves the campus but is available for private bookings of a 3,535-square-foot conference room on the second floor. Each of its four 874-square-foot meeting rooms is equipped with audio-visual and wireless Internet technology. Outside the room is the mural, painted by Chip Holton, who also produced artwork for the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro.

Downstairs, a 96-seat tiered auditorium is outfitted with Smart Technology. A patio adjacent to the first-floor meeting space is available for outdoor events.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — It’s home to Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, but an event center that opened in January is much more than a sports center. Leaders at one of the state’s fastest-growing college campuses decided to make the new sports facility an income generator by designing it for meetings as well.

The 27,000-square-foot center has high-tech sound, lighting and high-speed data capability. It is applying for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

In addition to the event center, the school’s old gymnasium has been converted into meeting space. The campus is a few minutes north of downtown Colorado Springs, near Interstate 25, 30 minutes from Colorado Springs Airport.
