California’s Meeting Resorts

Whether planners are putting together an executive retreat for top management, a company team-building event or other group gathering out to make a lasting impression, it’s hard to top the lure of the Golden State’s numerous off-the-beaten-path resorts.

From captivating coastal retreats to vital vineyard ventures and beyond, California’s cornucopia of resorts away from major metropolises is practically endless. Here we look at some of the special meeting spaces and other group offerings at five options for planners to ponder.

Omni La Costa Resort & Spa

Carlsbad

A short drive north of San Diego, the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad is a sprawling Spanish Colonial-style destination property acclaimed for spacious guest rooms, extensive wellness and recreation amenities, and family‑friendly features. The resort spans 400 acres and features two championship golf courses, an award‑winning spa, eight pools, 17 tennis courts and a 9,100-square-foot athletic club. Accommodations include more than 500 luxe guest rooms, suites and villas.

“The resort offers just over 100,000 square feet of total meeting and event space, with a strong mix of both indoor and outdoor venues,” said Melissa Liebengood, director of marketing for the property. “On the indoor side, our largest space is the Costa del Sol Ballroom at just over 18,000 square feet, and Costa de la Luna is another highly flexible general session space that works well for a variety of program sizes. We also have a junior ballroom, along with several breakout rooms and midsize spaces that allow groups to build more complex agendas without feeling constrained.”

Where the resort really shines, she said, is with its outdoor component.

“We offer a wide range of venues, including large lawns, courtyards and terrace-style spaces that can accommodate everything from receptions to full-scale dinners and team-building events,” Liebengood said. “Groups often take advantage of that flexibility to create programs that move throughout the property.”

The combination of scale, variety of spaces and the ability to incorporate outdoor settings is what tends to appeal most to planners, she said. In terms of popularity, Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luna are the most requested indoor spaces for general sessions, while alfresco venues like Luna Lawn, the Plaza and the resort’s larger lawn spaces are consistently used for receptions and evening events.

The property features 1,100 guest rooms and more than 275,000 square feet of event space, including a 40,000-square-foot ballroom and 17 additional meeting rooms. Outdoor venues can accommodate receptions for up to 1,000 guests. The property is also home to a 200,000-square-foot gaming floor, reportedly the largest in the state.

Beyond meeting — and gaming — space, Pechanga provides a full resort experience with 14 restaurants, a luxury two-story spa and salon, a 4-acre pool complex, a championship golf course, a 1,200-seat theater and a wide range of entertainment options designed to enhance group stays.
