OAKLEY, Kan. — A twice-as-large-as-life bronze sculpture of Buffalo Bill on horseback hunting buffalo marks the spot of the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center, off Interstate 70 in Oakley, Kan., which will open later this year.

In addition to a visitors information center and a gift shop stocked with Kansas-made products, the center will have a 3,200-square-foot multipurpose meeting and event center. A staff event coordinator will assist meetings with catering, lodging and other needs.

The center will be in the middle of the Western Vistas Historic Byway. It is expected to open by late October, in time for the second annual Kansas Governor’s Ringneck Classic, a pheasant hunt that will be held in Oakley on Nov. 15.

Local resident Raelene Keller has helped raise funds for the center; her family donated the land for the center and the sculpture, which was installed in 2004.
