What’s new: The Bayfront Convention Center opened in 2007; the attached Sheraton Bayfront Hotel followed the next year. The Erie Art Museum opened a new wing in October and renovated its Old Customs House for events. Tullio Arena will complete a $42 million remake in 2012. A Hilton Garden Inn opened in 2009 as part of the Ambassador Conference Center. The Bel-Aire Clarion Conference Center will redo its ballroom in January. The Warner Theatre has begun a $16 million upgrade of its backstage. There’s a new meeting/banquet room and cafe at South Shore Wine Co.

Rooms:  Erie County has 4,000 guest rooms, many of them in hotels along Interstates 79 and 90. The 200-room Sheraton Bayfront, next to the convention center, is the city’s lone waterfront hotel.
Getting there: On the southern edge of Lake Erie in northwestern Pennsylvania, Erie is two hours by interstate from Cleveland; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Pittsburgh, Pa. Erie International Airport is served by US Airways, Continental and Delta/Northwest Airlines.
