What’s new: Bear Mountain State Park’s historic Bear Mountain Inn will reopen its first floor this fall after a $10 million restoration. West Point’s Thayer Hotel has renovated two meeting rooms and added a rooftop terrace. Catlin Gardens Inn opened in August with 40 suites and two large banquet halls. A $2 million renovation of the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel was completed in 2009.
The Rhinecliff Hotel reopened in 2008 after a $5 million rebuild. The Emerson Inn reopened in 2007, replacing the old inn that was destroyed by fire in 2005; it has a new spa and restaurant. The Mohonk Mountain House, 141 years old, opened its first bar and a green spa in 2005. A new high-speed water taxi shortens the trip between Poughkeepsie and Newburgh.
Rooms: Dutchess County has 2,800 guest rooms, Ulster County has 4,000, and Orange County has 3,400.
Getting there: The mid-Hudson Valley is served by Stewart International Airport, near Newburgh, N.Y. Amtrak trains from Penn Station in New York stop in Poughkeepsie and Rhinecliff. The Metro-North commuter railroad runs trains from New York City’s Grand Central Station to points north. Interstates 84 and 87 intersect in the Hudson Valley in Orange County near Newburgh.
