A day of Sioux Falls fun

During the stop at the Outdoor Campus, SMM attendees will make their own snacks — Smakos, a blend of a s’more and a taco –  over an open fire.

Another stop is the Old Courthouse Museum, opened in 1893, and now a history museum. Built of native Sioux Quartzite, the courthouse was designed by local architect Wallace L. Dowr.

Three floors of exhibits delve into topics like how South Dakotans have met the challenge of winter, how bicycles have affected daily lives and how the Vietnam War changed local people.

The tour ends at the Falls Overlook Cafe on the Big Sioux River in Falls Park. Views from the cafe, a restored 1908 hydroelectric plant, are said to be second to none in Sioux Falls.

The sound and sight of the river’s three-tier, tumbling falls will accompany a reception with appetizers such as date bites, sweet potato waffle fries and asparagus pillows.

Transportation will be provided from the reception to downtown Sioux Falls or attendees can take the 10-minute walk along the city’s bike path. Maps will be available. Along the way, they can admire the sculptures that are part of SculptureWalk, the city’s year-round, rotating outdoor exhibit of art. In downtown Sioux Falls, they can choose among several local restaurants for dinner, shop and enjoy downtown’s arts and culture.
