A moo-ving experience

Milk a cow, make ice cream, produce a television commercial: A visit to the Turkey Hill Experience can expand your horizons.

Opened in June about 20 minutes from Lancaster, Pa., the new attraction is all about the business of Turkey Hill, maker of the nation’s No. 4 ice cream and No. 1 refrigerated iced tea.

Nine interactive exhibits designed by Boston Productions combine history, science, technology and engineering. Boston Productions designed exhibits for the Hershey Story and the Connecticut Science Center, among others.

An abandoned silk mill in Columbia, Pa., that was restored houses the Experience, which lives up to its name in terms of group events. In the exhibit area, meeting goers can team up to develop and market their own ice cream flavor or have a “milk-off” using docile mechanical Holstein cows.

As you’d expect, ice cream is part of every event. “Oh, yes. Always,” said Kim Mable-Dolly of group sales.

Flavors run from universal favorite vanilla bean to seasonal specialties like Christmastime’s egg nog. Flavors made for professional sports teams, such as Eagles Touchdown Sundae and Phillies Graham Slam, are also options.

Catered meals of wraps and sides supplied by the Experience’s cafe can be followed with a scoop or two. Or events can focus totally on ice cream with an ice cream social, where three scoops of ice cream become a mountain of sweetness as guests pile on all the toppings they want.
