Recognitions: The National Organization on Disability named Alexandria one of the top accessible cities in the country in its 2009 Accessible America Competition.

What’s new: Early last year, Potomac Riverboat Co. began a water taxi service to and from National Harbor, a shopping and hotel complex across the Potomac River. The company is looking at other ways it can provide water transportation around the D.C. area. In the past three years, $388 million has been spent to build new hotels and renovate existing properties. A year ago, VisitAlexandriaVA.com launched an online restaurant reservation system using technology that was new in the United States.

Rooms: There are 4,746 guest rooms in 24 hotels.

Location: Alexandria is eight miles south of Washington, D.C., in northern Virginia. Its neighbor to the north is the suburb of Arlington, Va.

Transportation: Meeting attendees can compare fares at three airports. The nearest, on Alexandria’s edge, is Ronald Reagan Washington National; Dulles International and Baltimore Washington International are each about 30 miles away. Most of Alexandria’s hotels have free shuttles to Reagan National. The D.C. metro system has a station at the top of Alexandria’s King Street, where visitors can catch the city’s free trolley for rides up and down King Street’s 17-block length.
