Kudos: The hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of Historic Hotels of America.

What’s new: After two years on the market, the hotel sold last spring to Heaton Co. of Palm Beach, Fla.; Hay Creek Hospitality will manage it. Significant upgrades to guest rooms, public areas and meeting spaces will be completed by 2014. Already, the property has boosted its sales staff and has seen a 10 percent rise in occupancy for 2012 over 2011.

Rooms: 96 guest rooms in a mix of styles including 30 one-bedroom suites. Guest baths were upgraded about eight years ago and window air-conditioning units are installed in each room during the summer months.

Meeting space: The inn has some 5,000 square feet of meeting space, most in a former carriage house.

Amenities: Highfields Restaurant, Eagle Landing Tavern, a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts and an outdoor pool. The 75 oversized rockers along the 280-foot-long veranda are all the entertainment many guests require.

Getting there: In the White Mountains’ town of Jackson, the hotel is near Routes 16 and 302. Four major airports are within 140 miles: Portland, Maine, 70 miles; Manchester, N.H., 115 miles; Boston, 140 miles and Burlington, Vt., 140 miles.
