What’s new: Eau Claire hopes to capitalize on it downtown riverfront, where the upgraded Phoenix Park has already proved that people like to be near and have access to the water. A proposed development would include an arts center, shops, restaurants and student housing for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. A full-service Holiday Inn hotel will open on the city’s south side later this summer. A new student center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire devotes an entire floor to meeting and conference space.
Guest rooms: The area’s 2,000 hotel rooms include seven conference hotels.
Location: Eau Claire is in north central Wisconsin, about 90 miles due east of Minneapolis/St. Paul. It is five hours northwest of Chicago and four hours northwest of Milwaukee.
Getting there: Shuttles are available to and from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. At Eau Claire’s Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, United Express has daily flights to and from Chicago. Interstate 94 is a link to Madison, 178 miles southeast, and to the Twin Cities. U.S. Highway 53 connects Eau Claire to Lake Superior to the north and the Mississippi River to the south.
