What’s new: The Inn at Harbour Town in Sea Pines Resort has renovated its lobby and guest rooms. The Westin Hilton Head Resort and Spa and the Crowne Plaza Hilton Head Island Beach Resort have been certified by the South Carolina Green Hospitality Alliance Program. Hilton Head was the first South Carolina community to join Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program. Six of the island’s golf courses are in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.

More than 20 restaurants participate in the state’s Fresh on the Menu Program, serving meals that include at least 25 percent certified South Carolina-grown produce and seafood.

Kudos:
Audubon International awarded Hilton Head Island its Green Community Designation in September. The League of American Bicyclists awarded the island its Bicycle Friendly Community Award at the Silver level in May.

Rooms:
Hilton Head Island has about 3,000 hotel rooms and some 6,000 home and villa rentals.

Hilton Head Island is a foot-shaped barrier island off South Carolina’s Atlantic coast. It is 45 miles north of Savannah, Ga. and 95 miles south of Charleston, S.C.;

Getting there:
By car, Hilton Head Island is 18 miles south of Interstate 95. Hilton Head Airport is five miles from the island’s resorts and offers direct flights to and from Atlanta and Charlotte; Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, served by most major carriers, is 45 miles south of the island with shuttle service.
