What’s new: The lodge and convention center, part of Alabama’s state park system, reopened in 2008 after a four-year renovation and expansion that included adding guest rooms and conference facilities. Its 18-hole golf course reopened in June after a $2 million makeover.

Rooms: The lodge has 112 guest rooms including 13 suites; most have private balconies that overlook the lake. The park also has 19 two-bedroom chalets, 15 lakeside cottages and a campground.

Meeting space: The lodge has 13,900 square feet of meeting space in seven rooms grouped in four clusters.

Amenities: An 18-hole championship golf course, large terraces overlooking Lake Guntersville, a dining room and a bar/lounge, wireless Internet access in lobby and meeting rooms, a beach, an outdoor pool, saunas and hiking trails.

Location: The lodge sits atop a mountain in Lake Guntersville State Park in northeastern Alabama, 45 minutes east of Huntsville and 1.5 hours from Birmingham. Each of those cities has an airport. Parking is free.
