Kudos:
In 2011, Parents & Colleges, a guide for parents of college-bound students, named Lawrence one of America’s 10 best college towns. U.S. News and World Report named Lawrence one of the nation’s “Best Places to Retire” in 2007, and the American Planning Association designated Massachusetts Street – the city’s main stretch of downtown – one of the “10 Great Streets for 2010.”

Did you know:
Lawrence is one of the few U.S. cities founded for purely political reasons. The New England Emigrant Aid Society, a group of abolitionists, flocked to the territory and established Lawrence in 1854 in an effort to keep the state free from slavery.

Hotel rooms:
The city’s 1,300 guest rooms will soon grow to almost 1,400 with next summer’s opening of a 91-room Marriott TownePlace downtown.

Location:
Lawrence is in eastern Kansas, on Interstate 70 some 25 miles east of Topeka and 40 miles west of Kansas City.

Getting there:
Lawrence’s location just off I-70 makes driving to the city easy. The nearest airport is Kansas City International Airport, about a 50-minute drive.
