Kudos: In 2012, AAA Southern Traveler chose Natchez as “Best Small City for a Weekend Getaway” and Life Magazine placed it in its “100 Places To See in Your Lifetime.” Natchez is also in the bestseller “1,000 Places To See Before You Die.”

What’s new: Magnolia Bluffs Casino opened in December.  Natchez’s second casino, it does not have a hotel. An 81-room Holiday Inn Express will open downtown in April. Warren and Nancy Reuther, part owners of the Grand Hotel, bought Monmouth Historic Inn in April and are making improvements.

Hotel rooms: Some 800 downtown and more than 1,000 citywide, as well as dozens of rooms in bed-and-breakfast inns.
