What’s new: The Newport News Marriott at City Center, with the city’s largest conference center, opened in 2005 as part of City Center, a mixed-use development that includes shops and restaurants. The Omni Newport News Hotel renovated its conference center in 2009. The Virginia Living Museum added a 100-seat outdoor amphitheater in 2008. The Mariners’ Museum added 68,000 square feet in 2007; the space includes the USS Monitor Center and an events concourse.

The Holiday Inn Newport News was upgraded in early 2010 in conjunction with the relaunch of the Holiday Inn brand. Half of the suites at the Point Plaza Suites were redone in 2010.///

Rooms: Newport News has 4,200 guest rooms; more than 700 of them are in the City Center area.

Getting there: Newport News, on the Virginia Peninsula in southeastern Virginia, is between Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. Four airlines serve the Newport News Williamsburg International Airport, which is 15 minutes from the heart of the city. Amtrak has direct service from Washington. Newport News is an hour’s drive from Richmond and three hours from Washington. Interstate 64 cuts through the city.
