Kudos: TripAdvisor named Santa Cruz among 15 top U.S. destinations on the rise for 2012. Listverse.com put Santa Cruz beaches at the top of its “10 Best Beaches in the World,” and FamilyTravel.com and Food & Wine are among the publications that have named the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk one of the world’s best.
What’s new: BPR Properties opened the Hotel Paradox in mid-August. The 170-room boutique hotel has 8,000 square feet of meeting space.
Location: Santa Cruz is on the northern edge of Monterey Bay, about 70 miles south of San Francisco, 30 miles south of San Jose and 40 miles north of Monterey.
Getting there: There are four airports from which to choose. The closest, Mineta San Jose International Airport is 45 minutes from Santa Cruz. Several commercial airlines fly into Monterey Regional Airport, a 50-minute drive. San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport are about a 1.5-hour drive in traffic.
