Bowling gets the ball rolling on team-building event

SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, La. — A Bossier City bowling alley has designed employee outings that make brains start storming by getting the ball rolling and the darts flying.

Holiday Lanes’ Play Therapy is a two- to three-hour event where groups bowl, throw darts and play video games; eat and meet; have pictures taken; and win awards. Team-building competitions led by a “play therapist” are the focus.

“It’s not all about bowling really,” said Robin Williams, marketing director at Holiday Lanes. “It’s about building camaraderie among participants and creating a productive and motivated team environment.”

The Lanes’ Tin Pin Lounge can cater the celebratory meal when play is done, or planners can hire their own caterer.

The bowling alley devised the package because of growing demand for fun team-building events. For example, in a Destination Hotels and Resorts Meetings and Groups state of the industry survey, 54 percent of respondents said that active team-building options were of the greatest interest.

Boeing and Sci-Port are among the organizations that have tried Play Therapy. “The fun we shared with our co-workers was wonderful,” said Kourtney Washington, membership and events manager at Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center.

“The activities Robin had on our agenda were purposeful and built excitement between us all,” she said. “As an employee who participated in this team-building experience, I would definitely recommend it to other businesses. Our team looks forward to coming back.”
