Convention center coming to Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An idea in the works for years will soon come to fruition in downtown Gainesville. The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce announced plans for a new convention center to be completed by 2016.

The 52,000-square-foot center will mean more conference space to enable Gainesville to capture the attention of larger groups.

“We’re all about making Gainesville the hub of talent, innovation and opportunity, and that’s opportunity for everyone, for the academic community as well as the public,” said Adrian Taylor, vice president of Innovation Gainesville and Regional Initiatives. “There would be more people going to shops, restaurants and a cultural arts or a sports event.”

Developers estimate the cost at more than $26 million.
