Golden Isles: The Barriers & Brunswick

• Epworth by the Sea offers motel rooms, apartments and cabins on 100 peaceful acres. Owned by the United Methodist Church, the retreat center is open to all denominations as well as to other groups in search of a Christian place for worship, study and fellowship.

• On Jekyll Island, the 157-room Jekyll Island Club is an old favorite, surrounded by lawns and the “cottages” built as vacation homes by captains of industry.

What can we do in our free time?
• Tee it up. Between the mainland and the islands, there are 198 holes of golf.

• Do some shopping in historic downtown Brunswick. There are antiques stores, art galleries and almost a dozen local restaurants. Check out the commanding Old City Hall, a part-time courthouse that has become an off-site venue.

For a true taste of the Golden Isles.

Stacks of firewood outside a former gas station make it clear that Southern Soul is all about barbecue. The restaurant lays pork, beef, turkey, chicken and sausage over a hardwood fire for 12 hours and then serves it as sandwiches or as platters. Four sauces include Red Swine Wine. It is no wonder “Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins,” Garden and Gun, the New York Times and Southern Living have stopped by. Don’t leave the Blackwater Grill without sampling Brunswick stew. The Grill’s version is a two-time winner of the Brunswick Stewbilee. Blackwater also does Low Country boils on site or off with shrimp, sausage and all the fixins. The private dining room for 14 at Halyards Restaurant is suited to important dinner meetings with its flat-screen television, audiovisual system and wireless Internet access. Menus change with the seasons as ingredients are local and everything is made from scratch.
