A Small Sustainable Farm
The inn runs a small sustainable farm that guests are welcome to tour.
Meredith Kope, the energetic young farm manager, raises a range of things for the restaurant, from microgreens and pea shoots for garnishes to heritage tomatoes and edible flowers. She also grows shiitake and oyster mushrooms on piles of logs in the woods.
Fruit from a small orchard becomes tasty jams for croissants made fresh each morning and for scones in the afternoon. A new apiary should produce honey by June.
Atop a hill, Greyson, a statuesque llama, stands guard over a flock of sheep. Chickens scoot in and out of their spacious coop laying eggs for breakfast. And Oliver, a 700-pound rescue pig, sleeps in the sun.
Wine, Golf And Wandering
There are 50 wineries in Virginia’s Loudoun County, three within a 10-minute drive; the inn will arrange tours to those nearby. There are also many golf courses. And the little town of Middleburg, population 650, is full of shops for browsing.
A well-known colonial town formally established in 1787, Middleburg’s history as a crossroads for travelers dates to the 1730s. As a result, meeting attendees with time to kill can browse in downtown shops that carry antique firearms, equestrian and saddlery items, and European imports. Three noted inns in Middleburg in addition to the Goodstone Inn are the Red Fox Inn and Tavern, the Middleburg Country Inn, and the Windsor House Inn.
