Hendricks County is a good match for those who prefer scenic byways to crowded highways.

Bordered by interstates 70 and 74 and 15 minutes from Indianapolis, the county has 1,600 guest rooms.

Tours that range from arts and culture to the Main Street tour shared with neighboring Morgan County can be mixed and matched to interests and time constraints, said Josh Duke, of Tour Hendricks County.

The most unusual is the Green Spree tour, which includes a trip to the landfill. “It’s so educational,” said Duke. “You learn what happens when you reduce, reuse and recycle and what happens when you don’t.”

The landfill is a good example of reuse. Part of it is now an 18-hole golf course.

The Andy Griffith-themed Mayberry Cafe in Danville is a good lunch stop. “Some people claim it is the best-themed restaurant anywhere,” said Duke.
