Where is Delaware County’s Brandywine Country?

Delaware County (population 550,000) is in southeastern Pennsylvania, between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del., minutes from each city. The county borders Philly at several points. Delaware County is 92 miles from New York City, 127 miles from Washington and 303 miles from Pittsburgh.

How do we get there?
Philadelphia International Airport is in Delaware County. Interstates 76 and 95 and many other major roadways pass through the area. Amtrak service is available, as are Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) trains, buses and trolleys.

What types of meetings best suit the area?

Access to a major airport and 4,000 hotel rooms appeal to corporate meetings. Sports events are drawn by PPL Park, built for the Philadelphia Union Soccer Team, and the IceWorks Skating Complex, which hosts two dozen national and international ice hockey tourneys a year. Golf is also big; among the area’s two dozen courses is Merion Golf Club, site of the 2013 U.S. Open.

What’s new?
• Five hotels have opened in the past four years, and five are planned in the next three. Two hotels will be built in the Route 291 corridor. Another, a boutique hotel, will be built at Swarthmore College. In addition, a Courtyard by Marriott is in the works for the Springfield Country Club, and there are plans for a hotel at Sun Center Studios, a production facility in Chester Township that has produced films, television shows and commercials. A film museum and movie-related attractions are planned at the studios.

• Rose Tree Tavern, the CVB’s welcome center in Media, has been honored for its restoration. The 250-year-old building has been a tavern, an inn and a stagecoach stop.

• The 40-room Wayne Hotel, a historic property 18 miles from Philly in that city’s upscale Main Line suburbs, underwent an extensive renovation last year.
