WILKES-BARRE, Pa. –The Mohegan Tribe broke ground in mid-July on a $50 million hotel and convention center for Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The 238-room hotel and convention center are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.

The hotel’s amenities will include an indoor pool, fitness center and views of the horseracing track. A 20,000-square-foot convention center to be built adjacent to the hotel will accommodate as many as 800 for banquets and as many as 1,500 for concerts.

“Since we first opened, we knew that a hotel and convention center would greatly enhance our operation and make a more complete destination,” said Bobby Soper, president and CEO of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. “We are excited to announce that we are moving forward with this ambitious project, and we are even more thrilled about what this means to the local economy from a job creation and tourism perspective.”

The Mohegan Tribe also operates Mohegan Sun resort and casino in southeastern Connecticut. The Pennsylvania casino opened in 1996; the harness-racing track dates to1965. The 400-acre site is near Wilkes-Barre, 125 miles northwest of New York.
