Oklahoma City: Southwest Superstar

A District for Everyone

Oklahoma City carves out 12 distinct districts around town that offer plenty of interesting and fun things for visitors to do.

“There’s never a dull moment for groups because there is so much to go and see or to try out, whether it’s all of our museums or the outdoor activities in the Boathouse District,” said Brittany White, marketing and communications coordinator for the Oklahoma CVB. “There’s something for every type of group to enjoy.”

The Bricktown Entertainment District is a former downtown warehouse district just steps away from the Cox center and numerous hotels. It’s full of restaurants, nightlife and sports options. Stroll along, or take a water taxi ride on the meandering milelong Bricktown Canal, which is often compared to the famed San Antonio River Walk.

The Boathouse District gets its name from the fact that Oklahoma City is the official U.S. Olympics/Paralympics training site for canoeing, kayaking and rowing. Located close to downtown on the Oklahoma River, the district has several unique meeting options and plenty of outdoor activities for non-Olympians. Zip lining, dragon boating, stand-up paddleboarding and cycling are just a few. Many activities are great for team building. There are equipment rentals available for the public. OKC Riversport has a six-story adventure course with activities like the Sky Trail, the Sky Slide and the Rumble Drop to excite the senses.

A popular place to congregate these days in Oklahoma City is the Midtown District, which hosts the largest monthly food truck festival in the country. Still other districts in Oklahoma City promote history, Asian culture and food, creative arts and the city’s stockyards industry.

The CVB’s Carrier says Oklahoma City is rated one of the more cost-conscious cities in which to live, work or meet.

“We’re very affordable,” he said. “That’s what people in the meetings industry look for. What’s it going to cost me to hold a meeting, and will I get good value for price paid? The answer is most definitely yes.”
