Purpose-filled porpoises

A group of bottlenose dolphins swims fast toward the marshy shore on Hilton Head, pushing a bow wave, a wave of water filled with a school of fish, ahead of them. The fish land on a mud bank and the porpoises hurl themselves onto the bank, “stranding” on land as they eat as many of the beached fish as possible. Full of fish, they slide back into the water.

Only in coastal Georgia and South Carolina does this phenomenon known as strand feeding occur every day.

Groups can see the porpoises’ cagey dining strategy on a kayak tour with Outside Hilton Head (OHH). Outfitters and team-building specialists for 30-plus years, the company also offers kayak fishing, charter-boat fishing, full-moon tours, stand-up paddle boarding, tours
of Daufuskie Island, and an extensive menu of half-day and full-day team-building possibilities.

Although OHH takes its corporate services across the nation, its Team Leadership Development Program’s home base is on its private island off the coast of Hilton Head. There, groups can navigate a challenge course, participate in custom-planned team building and workshops, or relax amid nature on a Low-country island.

“Physical ability is not a factor in most of our team activities,” said Mike Overton, owner of OHH. “They’re about achievement as a group, not as an individual. A big part of making change is getting out of one’s comfort zone. That’s when people can take a risk and grow. The stunning beauty of Page Island empowers people to do just that.”
