Radford University’s New Hotel, Conference Center Nearly Complete

Radford, Virginia— Construction of Radford University’s new boutique hotel and conference center is nearly complete, and university officials expect The Highlander in Radford, Virginia, to open in January.

Crews broke ground in April 2021 on the $40 million property, located on Tyler Avenue across from Radford University’s main campus. The Highlander is six stories tall and boasts about 88,000 square feet with 124 guest rooms, including four suites. The hotel will provide amenities not available at current area hotels, such as a coffee shop, ballrooms and modern guest accommodations. The Highlander’s 1,650-square-foot rooftop terrace and 2,750-square-foot indoor rooftop bar and restaurant overlook campus with a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A 4,000-square-foot conference space will accommodate 250 to 300 people, allowing the university to potentially host large-scale events that it could not welcome in the past, such as business expos and conferences. The Highlander will also solve the issue of hosting visiting professors, alumni and parents in a setting that complements the university. A special-purpose entity created for the project will own and operate The Highlander for the benefit of Radford University and its foundation, according to an October 28 Virginia Business article. Aimbridge Hospitality will manage the property.
