The family friendly Beaches of South Walton

The Beaches of South Walton’s best selling points are simple: sand and water.

Its beaches are blazing white, made of quartz particles that washed down the Appalachian Mountains 20,000 years ago. The ocean, depending on the light and the surf, ranges from emerald to aqua to azur.

The water comes in such surreal shades of blue and green, that “they think we touch up the pictures,” said Watkins.

Locals make the point that South Walton is unlike the rest of Florida. It is closer to New Orleans than to Orlando. Tourists flock there in the summer, not the winter. Development is broken by four state parks along the beach. Said Watkins, “There is no incorporated city in the 26 miles of beach. We are not like Panama City, Pensacola or Fort Walton. It is just a different animal.”
