Springfield, Massachusetts — The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) recently celebrated the official ribbon cutting of The Landing and the new Convention Center Carpark adjacent to the MassMutual Center. While the Convention Center Carpark officially opened to the public earlier this year, the plaza and streetscape portions of the project were completed this summer.
Located next to the MassMutual Center and Convention Center Carpark, The Landing is a new open-air plaza ideal for outdoor events in downtown Springfield. Whether expanding an event in the Convention Center or Arena, or hosting a standalone gathering, The Landing offers 12,900 square feet of flexible open-air space. Rentals start at $2,500 and are available mid-April through October, rain or shine, so events are weather-dependent. A food and beverage minimum applies, and venue rentals include the use of existing permanent seating, built-in lighting and up to two risers, as well as two on-site staff members. Groups can also reserve lawn games and outdoor activity options.
The new parking facility replaces the Civic Center Garage, which was built in 1971 and had deteriorated to the point where only 700 out of its 1,000 parking spaces were able to be utilized. As a result of a collaborative process involving key stakeholders from the city of Springfield, it was determined the best way forward was for the MCCA to purchase, demolish and replace the garage.
The Convention Center Carpark is five-stories, 350,000 square feet and has room for 817 vehicles, including EV infrastructure and charging stations. It is anticipated that the forward-looking development will also activate foot traffic in the area by incorporating retail space on the first level of the garage.
