The town that roped Will Rogers

Tell me about some offbeat spots for off-site events.

• Oklahoma’s best-known cowboy comes to life at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch, a 400-acre spread anchored by the white frame home where Rogers was born. Chuck-wagon dinners under the stars and Will Rogers re-enactors are possibilities there.

• Watch one of Will Rogers’ movies and unwind with a glass of wine during a reception at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. The museum’s displays include artifacts, Western artwork and an extensive saddle collection.

• See the world’s largest privately owned gun collection at the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum. In an area devoted to outlaws, see guns used by Bonnie and Clyde and Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd.

Where can we get a true taste of Claremore?
Homemade chicken salad is the specialty of the Pink House, a tea room that also serves soups, quiche and desserts. Another hotspot is the Tea Room at the Belvidere, set in the city’s Victorian house museum. Everyone shows up early at Eggbert’s, a local favorite. For Oklahoma barbecue, Buddy’s Grill is a must-stop.

Tell me about some extra-special CVB services.
When the Oklahoma Museum Association held its conference in Claremore last year, community volunteers staffed registration, delivered and set up pipe and drape for a tradeshow and gave tours through Claremore’s museums at evening events. When “outlaws” showed up at the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum and tried to stage a holdup, volunteers put a stop to their shenanigans.
