TOWSON, Md. — New event space and a lobby that is more of a social hub are among the improvements at the Towson University Marriott Conference Hotel. The 192-suite property is adjacent to Towson University in a busy Baltimore suburb.

A rarely used area of the hotel was turned into 2,000 square feet of event space for social occasions. The modern decor includes groupings of sofas and chairs and access to a large terrace.

In keeping with Marriott’s move to turn its hotel lobbies into gathering places, the hotel’s lobby was redesigned to encourage guests to mingle, work and lounge there.

“With the revitalized spaces, we are taking an enthusiastic approach at creating a gathering place,” said David Hinshaw, general manager.  “Here, guests can tailor their use of the spaces to fit their own needs. It makes our hotel more like a modern living space, more like home.”

The hotel celebrated its new look with a grand reopening that involved local, university and Marriott International officials. The university connection was played up as the school’s jazz, improvisation and dance groups performed.

Including the new event space, the hotel has 14,000 square feet of meeting space in as many as 19 meeting rooms. Carpet, wall coverings and window treatments were replaced in meeting rooms, and Wi-Fi capabilities were expanded. Large flat-screen televisions, multimedia connectivity panels and conference-call capabilities were added to two boardrooms.

The hotel’s location has been a selling point. Guests can walk to the Towson Town Center Mall and exercise on the university’s trails.

Twelve miles from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the hotel is also convenient to Washington; Dover, Del.; and Philadelphia.
