Nestled along the Gulf Coast in a relaxed subtropical setting, Corpus Christi, Texas, presents the perfect platform for mixing meetings business with coastal fun.
Attendees can go from a conference room to the bounty of beaches in minutes, and the “Sparkling City by the Sea” beautifully balances intriguing event venues with delicious dining, nightlife and casual entertainment.
“You can get the charm of a small-town feel just steps away from the beach,” said America Segura, senior director of communications for Visit Corpus Christi. “The water is what really sets us apart.”
And the city’s waterside is indeed a main meeting asset. Popular McGee Beach along Ocean Drive is perfect for receptions, casual group strolls or morning wellness sessions.
“You can go horseback riding on the beaches, which are drivable and walkable,” said Segura. “We also have stand-up paddleboarding and yoga, glow-in-the-dark kayaking — there’s really something for early risers as well as night owls.”
Making planning even easier, many of the city’s key event spaces, attractions and dining spots are located on the water. Among them is the iconic USS Lexington, a massive retired aircraft carrier now home to a museum, flight simulators, event spaces and more.
Destination Highlights
In addition to the miles of beaches, local highlights also include the South Texas Botanical Gardens, sprawling across 182 acres and home to endless fabulous flora, plus fantastic fauna that include friendly tortoises, exotic parrots and seasonal butterflies. Groups can explore various nature trails, gardens and conservatories — and planners can ponder several event indoor and outdoor spaces, including a popular rose garden and pavilion.
Segura also suggests another attraction with animal magnetism: the Texas State Aquarium, the largest in the state and one of the most spacious in the entire nation. Its immersive exhibits transport visitors to ecosystems such as coral reefs, the Amazon River and Caribbean islands, among many other settings. Groups can dine while admiring sharks and other sea creatures through large viewing windows, and planners will appreciate the many high-capacity meeting spaces.
Distinctive Venues
The USS Lexington is a spectacular option for off-site affairs and other group fun, including escape rooms, team-building missions and naval-themed scavenger hunts. Event spaces range from the massive outdoor Flight Deck, which Segura said can host thousands — enlivened by sweeping views of Corpus Christi Bay and a backdrop of authentic military aircraft — to intimate areas such as Mess Decks and Ready Rooms for board meetings and breakouts. Other options include the high-ceilinged Hangar Deck, ideal for functions ranging from trade shows to banquets, and even a theater for keynotes, award ceremonies and film screenings.
On a more modest scale but also compelling is the Texas Museum of Asian Cultures, a trove of art and artifacts near North Beach. Education and activity rooms offer classroom-style settings for lectures and workshops, while the main gallery room offers a more substantial space surrounded by museum exhibits. Another appealing off-site option is the Art Center of Corpus Christi, located centrally in the city’s Bayfront district and host to indoor galleries and outdoor courtyards and plazas, all available for event rentals.
Major Meeting Spaces
“People usually use the convention center, but we have a variety of venues,” said Segura, referring to the impressive Hilliard Center, overlooking the bay and providing planners with more than 138,000 square feet of event space that includes a large exhibit hall, spacious ballroom and even a 10,000-seat arena. The dynamic venue also boasts dozens of customizable spaces, and its unique external design — including the shimmering fronting with folding glass panels tinted in shades of green and aqua — make events here even more memorable.
Nearby, Ortiz Center offers a historic and intimate option. Built in the 1920s, the former warehouse recently underwent a $17 million renovation. It now offers about 16,000 square feet of flexible event space ranging from smaller meeting rooms to a spacious ballroom and theater-style capacity for up to 1,200 people — all surrounded by original exposed brick and beams.
Several area hotels are home to some kind of meeting space offerings, but the clear standout here is the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel, with more than 24,000 square feet of event space that includes two ballrooms.
After the Meeting
When downtime arrives, planners and attendees will enjoy ways to have fun all over town. Options include wandering the 40,000-square-foot Museum of Science & History, home to wonders running the gamut from ancient ship artifacts to an outdoor Music Garden showcasing giant interactive instruments. And from April to September, sports-minded groups can head to Whataburger Field to watch the Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros.
“We also have lots of dining experiences,” said Segura. “You can have a little evening nightcap at Bar Under the Sun or have dinner at the Water Street Oyster Bar.”
When asked about appealing neighborhoods to explore, Segura was quick to recommend
Chaparral Street or the Water Street Market area. The former is a bevy of historic buildings, public art and murals, and nightlife that includes the House of Rock. Nearby Water Street is best-known for its boutique shops and array of restaurants, such as Segura’s top suggestion for group dining — El Camino. The vibrant eatery serves seafood specialties and Tex-Mex classics, with varied seating areas and a lively patio.
