Folk music adds positive note
Situated in the “Folk Music Capital of the World,” the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View is dedicated to the region’s music and crafts heritage.

On any given day, you can listen to a fiddle-player or see a musical instrument being made. Organic herb gardens become classrooms for workshops on medicinal plants.

Sixty newly renovated cabins feature two queen-size beds, wireless Internet access, a television, a minifridge and small porches. Groups meet in the center’s 1,000-seat theater or 150-seat auditorium, according to Jimmie Edwards, director of lodging sales.

Other spaces include the 1,600-square-foot Bois D’Arc Center with an adjacent deck. The center’s restaurant, the Skillet, overlooks a butterfly garden and wildlife feeding stations.

Most groups schedule a folk music concert during their meeting. Picture dulcimers, violins, autoharps and mandolins.  “I call it traditional Southern string band music,” Edwards said.
