The Blockade Runner Beach Resort, a North Carolina coastal landmark since 1964, recently announced a renovation of its meeting spaces, guest rooms and common areas. The resort will also join Trailborn, the fast-growing outdoor hospitality brand, and undergo comprehensive upgrades to the lobby and common areas, guest rooms and bathrooms, indoor and outdoor dining options, meeting and event spaces and experiential offerings.
Upon completion in early 2025, the Blockade Runner will be rebranded as Trailborn Surf and Sound, named for the property’s location, with the sound on one side and the ocean on the other. During the renovation period, the hotel will remain open and continue to offer its signature hospitality.
“We’re incredibly excited to join Trailborn and embark on a joint mission to enhance every aspect of the guest experience and unveil Trailborn Surf and Sound to those who know and love us and to new visitors,” said Nicolas Montoya, property general manager. “Coupled with the property’s commitment to providing superb guest service, these updates will elevate our guests’ stays, ensuring the hotel remains a local fixture for many years to come.”
Montoya has been the GM of the property for 17 years. He and his team will continue to be a core part of delivering excellent hospitality for guests.
Key Renovation Highlights:
- Upgraded Accommodations and Amenities: The 151-key resort will feature fully renovated guest rooms and common spaces, designed in partnership with award-winning design firm Post Co. Guest rooms will be outfitted with new furniture and finishes, including Trailborn mattresses, smart TVs and walk-in showers. Guests will find an updated lobby and lounge, a curated retail market and new dining options, including a new lobby restaurant with a bar and an enhanced pool bar. The property’s design will blend contemporary style with nods to the location, featuring natural materials and water views.
- Meeting and Event Spaces: The property’s flexible indoor and outdoor meeting and event spaces, including its 2,800-square-foot ballroom, will all be upgraded. During the renovation, groups can reach out to the Blockade Runner directly to organize meetings and events for 2025.
- Sustainability and Community Focus: In alignment with Trailborn and the resort’s longstanding commitment to sustainability and community involvement, the guest experience will prioritize environmentally friendly practices and continue to support local initiatives, notably with the NC Coastal Federation, ensuring that the hotel remains a valued part of the Wrightsville Beach community.
“We’re thrilled to breathe new life into the Blockade Runner, honoring everything people love about the property while infusing it with a fresh design extending from the rooms to onsite food and beverage,” said Mike Weiss, co-founder and co-CEO of Trailborn. “Our goal is to retain the beloved charm that has made it a cornerstone of the Wrightsville Beach community and ensure that its unparalleled service, history and unique character continue to create more unforgettable memories for returning and new guests alike.”
