Kingsmill kicks off 10-year plan
New owner Xanterra Resorts has plunged into a 10-year plan for Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
This summer, the plan’s first phase will be completed when a lazy pool complex near the James River opens, affording a waterside spot for entertaining.
An upgrade of the marina restaurant will also be finished; thanks to the remodel, the former seasonal restaurant will be year-round, with 100 seats indoors and 100 outdoors.
The restaurant’s deck will be in demand for receptions as it is one of the few riverfront venues in Williamsburg, according to Richard V. Keurajian, vice president of sales and marketing.
The pool complex will eventually serve a planned 210-room hotel, part of the 420-room resort’s next phase. No start date for construction has been announced for the hotel, which will include meeting space.
Also this summer, construction of the first of 18 cottages along the river will begin. The four-bedroom homes will be available for meeting groups.
“They will be adjacent to the hotel complex to allow senior executives a higher-end appointment while still being close to the meeting space,” said Keurajian.

Canaan rebuilds guest rooms
In the mountains of West Virginia, one of the state’s favorite ski resorts is tearing down modular guest rooms built 34 years ago so that 160 new rooms, all with interior corridors, can be built in their place.
Begun last summer, the project at Canaan Valley Resort will be completed in 2013 and will include two new guests wings and a refurbishing of the main lodge, home to registration, dining and meeting rooms. The resort’s 12 meeting venues can accommodate up to 900 guests.
Canaan will remain open throughout the $24 million project.
As Canaan is being improved so are transportation options to the area. A new four-lane highway will cut travel time between the resort and the Washington metro area.
