Soak up fun in Statesboro

A performing arts center is among the meeting venues on the Georgia Southern campus.

Tell me about some interesting venues for off-site events.
• At GSU’s Wildlife Education Center and Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center, visitors watch eagles take flight.

• Step back 78 million years at the GSU Museum’s Hall of Natural History. Examine the skeleton of an ancient mosasaur, a marine carnivore that lived in the ancient seas that covered southern Georgia.

• Just past the city’s edge, Meinhardt Vineyards and Winery welcomes group events. For a different sort of rural experience, Hunter Cattle Co.’s educational tours cover its agricultural enterprises.

• What was once part of a model farm is now GSU’s 11-acre Garden of the Coastal Plain. Known for its azaleas, camellias and 20 endangered plants, it can accommodate events for as many as 800.

Tell me about some good local restaurants.
• R.J.’s Seafood and Steaks is a Statesboro tradition, in business 30 years with food that regulars describe as good and honest. Oyster stews, chicken gumbo and steaks are among its specialties.

• The black-eyed peas served with fried chicken and the blueberries and blackberries in the pie are bound to be local at 40 East Grill in downtown Statesboro.

• Run by a GSU alum, South and Vine Public House is also known for its focus on fresh ingredients.

• Chops on Main is known for steaks and pork chops, it also ups interest in shrimp and grits by adding mushroom sherry cream and applewood bacon.

• Statesboro takes pride in its barbecue; a good spot for a sample is Vandy’s Bar-B-Que, open since 1929 and voted Best in the Boro for nine years in a row.

Did you know?
• Georgia Trend Magazine named Statesboro one of eight Renaissance Cities in the state.

• Georgia Southern University (GSU) has been named a Green College by the Princeton Review and one of the nation’s top schools by U.S. News and World Report.

• The Clubhouse has won awards for the design of its bowling center. Its golf range has   been rated among the top 100 Golf Ranges in America by Golf Range Magazine for a decade.
