The Peaks Resort experience

The lowest level, Level B, has ski-in/ski-out access and houses a ski shop in the winter and a golf pro shop in the summer. The 70-par, 6,574-yard golf course is owned by the Telluride Ski Resort but opens to the public after 10:30 a.m. each day. The course is surrounded by the highest concentration of 14,000-foot mountains in the United States and has been a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for wildlife since 2002.

Thanks to its working relationship with the Telluride Conference Center, meeting space is less of a challenge for the Peaks than getting its guests to the resort. Flights into Telluride are not inexpensive, and there are few direct ones. The nearest airport, Montrose County Airport in Montrose, Colo., is an hour’s drive.

“That’s not unusual for a ski resort; it’s similar to Aspen or Vail,” Palmer said. “In winter, we do pretty well with flights, but in the summer, it can be a little harder to get to because there aren’t as many direct flights.”

The transportation issue isn’t considered a deal breaker to the annual Phlebology Colorado Meeting, which will be held at the Peaks for the fifth year next January.

The resort is the perfect blend of business and pleasure, with conference space, guest accommodations and recreation, said Leon Olsen, director of New Zealand-based Conference Matters, which organizes the meeting.

Although the resort is difficult to reach, the location adds charm and creates a collegial atmosphere, Olsen said.

The resort’s ballroom worked well for the group’s meetings.

Tables were arranged in a U-shape so attendees could face one another. Sponsor tables were also set up in the ballroom so sponsors could participate in the discussion. The official dinner was held in Palmyra, and attendees enjoyed skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling in their free time, Olsen said.

“It is one of the most spectacular and beautiful locations in the world with arguably the best snow conditions on a good day,” he said.
