Jefferson City
In the state capital, the new Missouri State Penitentiary Museum is set to open by June 1. Located on the second floor of the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau offices downtown, the museum will showcase photos, documents and artifacts from the prison, which accepted its first inmate in 1836.

“The Prison Museum will give us a brand-new way to showcase the history of MSP,” Sheila Sanford, prison tour coordinator, said. “When out-of-town visitors or bus groups tour the prison, the museum will give them a reason to come to downtown and, hopefully, explore a little more than they might have before.”

More than 50,000 people have toured the historic prison since the Jefferson City CVB, in conjunction with the state and the penitentiary redevelopment commission, began offering historic tours and ghost tours in 2009.
